“LIVE THE LIFE YOU IMAGINE”
This is the motto that Sonny Black has followed from a young age. He believes it can also be applied to his many collaborators, who he encourages to be the best they can be.
Born in Quebec to parents who are both musicians, Sonny Black started learning to play the piano at the age of four. Within a short time, instead of rehearsing sonatas and études, he started to improvise, and at 10 years old, composed his first piece of music.
From there he went on to pursue further studies in music and sound engineering, and in 1998 he opened his first production and recording studio.
Although active in the Montreal Hip Hop scene for many years as a composer and producer for Yvon Kreve, Dubmatique, Sans Pression and many others, it was in 2003 when he was noticed for his work on Corneille’s first album, “Parcequ’on vient de loin.” Further successes followed with projects for K’Maro, Marc-Antoine, Sheryfa Luna, etc. He has also ventured into the soundtrack genre, and has composed music for a television series, a few jingles, and has collaborated with an award winning film director on an animated short feature.
His work has been nominated and has won several awards, but for Sonny Black, the most precious is the trophy for International Author/Composer of the year, which he won at the SOCAN 20th anniversary gala in 2009 (Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada).
Until now he has participated in more than 50 projects in North America, Europe and Africa. He has many more works in progress for the next months and years to come, and despite continuing to work with long standing collaborators, he also enjoys developing new artists.
Sonny Black has cultivated an eclectic sound, and is at ease working within the styles of pop, R&B, soul, dance, variety, urban, and reggae. He likes to work on vocal arrangements and harmonies, and is constantly composing. He is always searching for new sounds and technology which resonates through his music, where he combines vintage and older analogue sounds, with symphonic elements.
Searched out for his imagination, versatility, and his openness, always with the artists’ best interests at heart he also never loses sight of public opinion and the reality of the market. Very in tune with the music industry, he is innovative while remaining accessible enough to reach the widest audience. He is proof that music is universal and that it can groove in any language.
